The unique character and features of Herceghalom are provided, in addition to monuments, by the twin line of ancient horse chestnut trees, continuing for almost two kilometers.
Many individual trees are over one hundred years old. The settlement is linked to one of the biggest Hungarian railway tragedies of the 20th century: In 1916 the express train arriving from the Franz Joseph cemetery in Vienna – which was packed full of passengers and carrying a large number of noblemen and representatives – crashed into the Graz passenger train at full speed at Herceghalom. According to records 72 people died and nearly 200 were injured in the accident. The park consisting of chestnut trees was established to commemorate the disaster. The dangerous trees were cut down in 2019, and specialists removed shrubs and bushes.
