Budajenő

Budajenő is located barely 20 kilometers from Budapest, on the edge of the Zsámbék Basin.

The settlement is one of the region’s gems, where the old and the new, a village atmosphere and urban mentality create a special mixture, yet still generate harmony.

The basin is bordered to the west by the Gerecse mountains, the Buda hills rising to 556 meters close the horizon to the north, but the basin is open to the south, with the Etyek hills stretching out in the distance.

Settlements with populations of 1,000-4,000, similar to the village, can be found in the basin. Zsámbék can be seen to the west with the church ruins, and then we can see the outline of Tök and Perbál, and to the east the rows of houses in Telki.

The predecessor of today’s settlement, named Jenő, first appeared in written sources in 1225, but archaeological findings reveal that it was founded even earlier. This is corroborated by the old church walls on the Calvary Hill, by its Byzantine style, and the complete absence of any traces of Gothic style. The old settlement was probably not located on the site of today’s settlement but could have been in the area of the small church on Chapel Hill and in the nearby valley. The inhabitants were probably tenants of the Abbey. Their lives and destiny were completely tied to Telki Abbey.
