Zsámbék-Medence

The monument is incomplete in its present form. The Statue of Immaculata (depicting the Virgin Mary) is missing from the column head. The Zichy family coat of arms and the nearby statue of St. Wendelin can be seen in the middle of the column.

At one time the statue stood in the middle of the large undeveloped square in front of the palace, which is now built up on three sides. This can be accessed from the palace. The ornate pillar starts out from the two-level, brick-layout plinth, on which the Immaculata (Immaculate) Statue used to stand. This starts from the base around the plinth. The pillars diagonally erected on the four corners of the lower level support the profiled ledge that closes the level. The heads of the pillars are substituted by volute (curved-line elements) brackets, a festoon can be seen in the mirror fields of the pillars.

An altar stone is connected to the frontal plane of the plinth, where 2 support pillars are missing, and only the fittings are in place. The relief below the altar stone depicts hell. The decoration is similar on the lateral and rear side of the first level: a stripe motif runs diagonally in the rectangular, curved and rounded field, with a rosette in the middle of the field. The 2nd level of the plinth is a brick-layout structure starting from the base - jumping inwards from the first-level planes; the structure’s volutes ending in spirals rest on the cut-out corners, decorated with acanthus leaves and garland motifs. A relief of St. Rosalia lying in her cave can be seen in the main facade field of the plinth section. The fields of the other 3 sides are empty. The rectangular banister (railing) pillar starts in the middle above the cornice that closes the 2nd level; the edges of which are decorated by leaf ornamentation with spiral endings. The Zichy family coat of arms can be seen on the front of the pillar. The Statue of Immaculata is now missing above the head; only the cloud garland fragment stretching below the feet of the Virgin Mary has survived the passage of time. St. Roch’s statue is the only one of the statues once found on the monument that is still in place. The stone block lying nearby is no doubt also a fragment of a fallen statue.
