Nyakas-kő (Nyakas Stone Hill)

The special rock formations of Nyakas Stone Hill were formed by the Pannonian Sea that turned into freshwater at the end of the Miocene Epoch, and these formations are among the most spectacular natural beauties of the micro-region, as well as the wider region.

A wonderful view opens up from here of the Bia Lake and in the direction of Etyek.

Nyakas Stone Hill and its environs includes two types of habitat: rocky grasslands and steppe slopes, largely together, side by side. We can find rich lichen and moss flora on the rock wall surface; the area under the trees initially slopes steeply and later has a slight slope. This offers a magnificent view, as the glorious zinnia creates entire fields here.

The field eryngo, also known as tumbleweed, mountain flax, blueweed, white campion and thyme on the slope creates fields dotted with an occasional prominent rock surface.

As the slope steppe terrain deepens, the vegetation gradually turns into a forest of karst bush. Slightly lower down, St. Lucie cherries, hawthorns, blackberries and sloes create impenetrable thickets in places.

Anyone hoping to make an excursion to this region with outstanding geological and landscape values can easily find the Nyakas Stone Hill because it stands out appreciably from the rocky terrain. You can get there on foot from Biatorbágy, or traveling by car you can park a little further south after Sóskút major. Another option: car park between Biatorbágy and Sóskút, after the Füzes (“Willow”) stream, where the road bends to the right. Setting off on foot from the viaduct on the path with red marking, after just one kilometer the red marking splits into two, you should continue along the right-hand path by Szili Chapel. We arrive at Nyakas Stone Hill after another 3 kilometers.
