Turkish well

After the fall of Buda, Zsámbék fell into Turkish hands and then the well with an integrated channel was built for an abundant source of water in the village in the second half of the 1500s, near the castle and today’s Zichy Palace.

And the centuries did not pass without trace above the well either; the structure was therefore restored for conservation in 1892.

The two-level fountain can be seen on the western edge of the large basin. The imposing 12.50 × 10.25 meter, two-level open fountain was built from large ashlars (construction stones formed into rectangles) and provided people in Zsámbék with good drinking water for centuries (right up to the 1960s). The spring also feeds the nearby Cloister Garden’s pond, but starting from the 70s the well only served as an extraction site for industrial water.
The fence walls are one meter high. The inscribed stone which advertised the name and rank of the building owner for a long time is now missing from one corner of the parapet.

Washing was possible on the lower level of the open fountain, water flowed from the brass taps on three sides of the well house, similarly to the fountain. Although there was no thermal spring, it has never frozen even in the most severe winters. The residents of the village carried drinking water home from here until the mid-1960s.
The spring water flows into the village park under the well. Ponds are generated there, and the water flows into the Békás stream when leaving the settlement to the south.
