
The Bia St. Anna Parish Church, which is subject to national monument protection, was built as a chapel to Sándor-Metternich Palace, presumably on the site of the former St. Christopher manor private chapel.
The sacred site referred to “as the painted palace chapel” probably used to form part of Promberger Palace, where priests from the Order of St. Francis brought from the dominion in Buda said mass in Biatorbágy every summer.
The new owner, Baron Antal Sándor, took over the estate including the church in 1784, and the restoration thereof, along with the palace, began immediately.
The lordship decided to build a separate, larger chapel in 1800, and its wooden tower was replaced in 1823 with the stone tower that is visible in the same form today. The plans for conversion works were probably drafted by the decisive figure in Hungarian classicist architecture, József Hild.
The chapel became a public church in 1863. The structure that had fallen into dilapidated condition was first restored in 1891-92 and then again in 1924 and 1928. The interior was supplemented with choir stalls on cast-iron pillars in 1909-10 and the church was furnished with a new bell in 1934. Four small bell windows were opened in the tower for the occasion.
