Baroque parish church

The single-nave Roman Catholic church with a single tower built in Baroque style stands on the corner of Magyar utca and Petőfi Sándor utca.

The foundation stone for the church consecrated in honor of John the Baptist was laid by Bishop of Veszprém Márton Padányi Bíró in 1749.

We can see the double coat of arms of the Zichy and Berényi families and the Good Shepherd statue above the gate, and the work by Zsámbék parish priest József Gál, a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, can be seen in the garden. The church furnishings and pulpit were designed by the Zichy family’s sculptor, Károly Bebó, in 1754.

The first mention of the organ comes from 1778: figures of the four evangelists can be seen among the fine, Rococo ornaments on the moderately gilded and carved instrument. The main altar here was completed in 1818. The side altar picture of the Annunciation was replaced in the second half of the century by the Rosary picture of Károly Jakobey.

The church has been a listed monument since 1958. The clockwork mechanism, bell and organ have recently been renovated with the help of people from Zsámbék’s twin town of Wettenberg. The tower was renovated from funds won in tenders and private donations in 2016.

Church organ music concerts are held several times every summer in the Baroque parish church in Zsámbék within the scope of “Prémontré Evenings”.
