German Nationality Memorial

The work by sculptor Ferenc Máhr, the German Nationality Memorial, depicts a winemaker standing next to a barrel.

In the background to the statue erected on the territory of the former line of circular cellars the gable of the vaulted cellar symbolizes transience and the twilight of winegrowing, and the face of the man standing in front staring into the distance symbolizes displacement.

The memorial constitutes a symbolic bow to the people of Zsámbék who developed the Pit and cellar area, who built the 72 magnificent cellars visible today, and who raised viticulture and wineries to a high standard. In addition, it commemorates everyone of German origin who populated Zsámbék from the Turkish era and thrived here by means of their hard work.

The opening ceremony for the German Nationality Memorial and the German Nationality Memorial Park was held on 19 August 2010. The former Lehmgrube, in other words the Józsefváros cellar area, became a memorial park with the inauguration of the statue.
